Extreme floodings are connected to heavy economic losses, material damage and human suffering. Especially the flood events at the Oder and Elbe river in 1997, 2002 and 2006 caused immense damage and initiated a discussion about the prevailing concepts of flood prevention. In the course of this discussion much consideration was given to landuse practices and their contribution to and effect on extreme runoff as well as on flood risks and hazards. A change in agricultrural landuse practices was subsequently demanded. However, the thesis that the type of agricultural landuse has a significant effect on flood events to this day lacks a diferenciated scientific verification.
