Nature Conservation

Brandenburg is rich in natural resources; 26 % of the federal state’s territory is protected by EU directives, and there are also three biosphere reserves, a national park and numerous nature parks and smaller nature reserves.

So far, however, insufficient attention has been paid to climate change in the development of protection initiatives. For this reason, the set targets and “no deterioration” concepts, geared towards maintaining current resources and stocks of species, are no longer sufficient.

Consequently, there is an urgent need to adapt the objectives of nature conservation concepts in order to reflect the challenges of climate change, and to build into them a flexibility so that they have the resilience to respond to changing conditions.

INKA BB is developing innovative management options and new political instruments to incorporate climate change strategy into official nature conservation in the Federal State of Brandenburg.
