The aim is to develop and assess legume-supported cropping systems that raise the economic and environmental performance of European agriculture. The project will deliver system-optimised cropping plans for European agricultural regions and enable local economic assessment of cropping systems. It will also assess the environmental impact of relevant farming system changes; on greenhouse gas, nitrogen budgets, biodiversity and soil function. It will address questions from the farm to the continental scale. The research is planned around an appreciation of how nitrogen fertilisation and the production and use of plant protein lie at the heart of many of the challenges arising from agriculture.
