Project 14

Agroforestry as a land use system adapted to increasing aridity

In sub-project 14 the attempt is made to evaluate alley-cropping systems as a valuable land use option for farmers in Brandenburg under the conditions of the predicted climate change. Agroforestry systems consist of different crops planted between hedgerows of trees and shrubs. The combination of tree and field strips (dimensions, rotation, species, etc.) is variable.

The aim of the study is to identify prospective or alternative uses for farmers in Brandenburg. In close cooperation with the farmers alley-cropping systems will be optimized so that potential ecological advantages are combined with economic efficiency. The approach of alley-cropping systems is well known as an adaptation strategy of agriculture to changing climate conditions, and as useful way to produce bioenergy.

As a result, the estimation of an ecological and economical balance for alley cropping systems will help to develop practice-relevant management recommendations. These recommendations will be provided to both the farmers and other stakeholders.
